Training on Generation Planning using the WASP software, in Jakarta, Indonesia

The national electricity company of Indonesia, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) selected ADICA to provide training on Generation Expansion Planning using the WASP-IV software.

ADICA Consulting is the worldwide leader in providing training and technical support on the use of the Wien Automatic System Planning (WASP) Package. During the past six months, ADICA conducted WASP training courses in Algeria, Cyprus and Indonesia for the following organizations:

• Commission de Régulation de l'Électricité et du Gaz- CREG and Societé Nationale de l’Electricité et du Gaz- SONELGAZ (Algeria),
• Electricity Authority of Cyprus- EAC (Cyprus), and
• Perusahaan Listrik Negara– PLN (Indonesia).

WASP is the most well-known and widely used optimization model for examining medium- to long-term expansion options for electrical generating systems. The software is distributed for use by electric utilities and regulation agencies in over 90 countries, as well as to 12 international organizations including The World Bank.

The most recent version of the software, called WASP-IV, utilizes probabilistic simulation for estimating power generating system production costs, unserved energy costs, and reliability, a linear programming technique for determining optimal dispatch policy satisfying user-specified constraints on fuel availability, electricity generation, and environmental emissions by groups of plants, and the dynamic programming method of optimization for comparing the costs of alternative system expansion strategies.
With the overall goal of improving national capacities for power system investment planning, ADICA recently trained power system professionals from Algeria, Cyprus and Indonesia in the use of WASP-IV.

The training centered on the development of a WASP Reference Case and several Sensitivity Analysis Cases using country specific data. The course staff advised participants on how to configure the model, improve model simulations, and rectify problems that are encountered while running the software.

As the WASP software is distributed free of charge, by the end of the training course, participants had the information, tools and know-how to provide valuable generation expansion planning support to their respective organizations.
